Home Made Croutons

My kids totally hate eating the end slices of bread.  They will do just about anything to avoid eating them.  Often they were sacrificed to the birds to maintain peace.  Other times the kids were told to suck it up and eat or go without. But lately, I’ve found a new way to use those end pieces and the odds and ends of a loaf of bread. Home made croutons.  Total Yum!

Cube your left over bread.  Here we have traditional white bread and home made wheat bread.

Place in a bowl and drizzle in some olive oil.  You aren’t looking to drench the bread, just coat it nicely.  Add your favorite seasonings.  For this batch, I used an Italian seasoning blend and grated parmesan cheese.

 

Place a single layer of bread cubes onto a cookie sheet and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 20 minutes.  Check after 15 minutes or so.  You don’t want to burn your bread, but you do want all the cubes to be hard and crunchy.

After the croutons have cooled, add to a salad, soup, or grind for your own bread crumbs.

  1. I love the ends of bread! However, with just the two of us, there is a lot of stale bread. I make croutons but spray with Pam, either butter-flavored or olive oil plus seasonings. Good for snacks too rather than other things.
